MODEL HISTORY
Hot hatches were first introduced to the masses by Volkswagen with the Golf GTi 1.6. This had the effect of kick-starting an entirely new enthusiast sector and in response, competing manufacturers eagerly joined the race to produce the most entertaining and capable hot hatches.
Of all the 80's nostalgic cars possibly the most unforgettable icons that ruled the roads then was the Peugeot’s 205 2.9 GTI, but back in the day, its bigger brother the 309 GTI was considered by all magazine road testers, to be the more capable all-rounder and they made no bones about it.
Better balanced dynamically, more spacious and equally as much fun to drive, the 309 GTI is today by far the rarer sibling. The handling was enhanced by a slightly longer wheelbase, with a larger boot. If you imagine a 309 with a 205 rear end... well, it's a 205 essentially and indeed many parts are interchangeable between them.
In the U.K. there are currently less than 60 309 GTI's that remain road registered, meaning these are very rare cars indeed nowadays; more exclusive than a 205 GTI 1.9!
Needless to say, this 309 GTI Phase II stands head and shoulders high above any example that's lived its life over the years on roads of the U.K.
This example was originally supplied new in Japan, complete with (very rare!) air conditioning, for its occupants to withstand Japan's hot and humid summers. It has never once in its life seen the typically horrific U.K. road conditions. There's no salt, grit, mud or other corrosive elements in Japan, where we purchased this example for our specialist stock.
If you've been looking for the best original phase II 309 GTi - you've just found it!
EQUIPMENT
This super rare Japanese Domestic Market Peugeot 309 GTI is offered in partnership with our UK preparation agents JT Auto Classics in Leicestershire.
This is the most desirable Phase II 3-door coupe with 5-speed manual, having covered an equivalent of just 54,903 miles from new.
Fitted with (never available in Europe as far as we know) factory air conditioning, it also has the sliding glass roof, as well as factory tinted glass. The original steering wheel is leather-trimmed, with original shift knob to match. Electric windows and central locking are also fitted. The interior is remarkably tidy, with no cigarette burns, or dashboard damage.
The only non-original interior items are the head unit (Good quality Japanese unit) and a set of brand new fitted floor mats.
EXTERIOR
The exterior body is in fantastic condition, finished in Peugeot Embassy black (EXY).
Pin straight, it looks superb from any angle, with a deep, reflective show quality shine throughout. Whenever we have driven this car in the U.K (albeit on only a few occasions so far), it has never failed to attract smiles and comments of nostalgia. People just can't believe this is a car of 1990 model year. Most say it looks like its still new!
INTERIOR
The original interior is in great original condition with no modifications, aside from a quality Japanese head unit and a brand new set of fitted floor mats.
This is a more spacious and comfortable place to cover miles in, when directly compared to a 205 GTI.
Upon first inspection in Japan, we noticed the lack of any tobacco smells in the cabin. A quick look in the ashtray revealed this has been a non-smoker's car from new. As part of our comprehensive preparation the interior has been treated to a professional cleaning treatment throughout. The original seats, both front and rear are in excellent original condition with no saggying or tears to the bolsters, as would usually be found in tired high mileage examples.
The factory fitted sunroof works perfectly with the vacuum operated rubber seal system operating correctly, allowing the sunroof to be slid back and forward with ease.
A new set of door seals have been fitted by ourselves to ensure wind noise is kept to a minimum in the cabin and for it to remain moisture free.
Very rare factory fitted air conditioning is fitted and has recently been serviced. We're delighted to confirm it is fully working and blows ice cold, on demand.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
This example has received an extensive mechanical servicing program which has been carried out at our UK workshop to ensure it runs perfectly for the new owner. Servicing included Petronas 10w40 oil and oil filter, Bosch spark plug set, air filter, new ignition leads, distributor cap and rotor arm, ignition coil and ignition module.
A new Bosch fuel filter and in-tank fuel pump have also been fitted.
Coolant was drained, flushed and refilled with fresh coolant.
A new cambelt kit had been fitted very recently while the car was still in Japan, just prior to it coming under our care.
The engine is smooth and leak-free with no smoke present at all, indicating the car hasn't led a hard life and been well cared for with regular oil changes, as is typical of cars in Japan.
The original factory fitted catalytic converter along with the original exhaust (yes - you read that right!) is still fitted.
Upon first inspection we found the clutch to be nearing the end of its life, so we have replaced this with a new original equipment quality Borg & Beck complete clutch kit and refilled the gearbox with fresh oil.
The clutch pedal is now light, smooth and progressive. Gearbox shows no wear and all gears engage perfectly.
WHEELS, BRAKES & SUSPENSION
An original complete set of Speedline alloys are fitted. These have been refurbished to better than original finish by Perfection UK, along with fitment of 4 new matching Toyo Proxes T1-R tyres.
Chassis-wise the car has required very little, just a new set front track rod ends have been fitted and geometry alignment has been carried out on a Hunter laser alignment machine, to ensure this car drives as good as new.
CONDITION REPORT
Originally supplied new by Austin Rover Japan in 1990 for the Japanese domestic market and with all the right ingredients for a classic hot hatch present, we are confident this example will delight its new owner.
Original JDM 309 GTI’s are virtually impossible to find and seldom become available for export, so we jumped at the chance to own this example and work on it alongside its sister car the 205 GTI with the goal of offering this car for sale to European and U.K. customers wanting only the very best
As expected for a 309 GTI that was originally supplied new to Japan , rust simply isn't an issue anywhere on this car. The shell is almost as good as the day it rolled off the production line. Amazing considering that this is of 1990 production year. Underneath it is fantastic with sills, jacking points, brake lines etc. still factory original and still looking nearly factory fresh after all this time.
TEST DRIVE
Driving this car back-to-back with the 205 GTI highlights Peugeot's chassis genius at the time, with the same DNA flowing through all of its performance models of that era.
Test drive reports a strong, smooth and healthy engine that pulls eagerly throughout and combined with a drama free gearbox and an honest and brilliant chassis, the ride quality is spot-on and performance feels on-par with the 205 GTI 1.9's we also supply.
The 309 GTI feels a very balanced car, egging you on to extract the best from it, leaving you with a grin from ear to ear.
Price includes full UK registration, new MOT and 3 months' comprehensive warranty. Viewing is highly recommended at our preparation agent's premises in Leicestershire by appointment.
