The Lancer Evolution 6 Tommi Makinen also known as the TME, or Evo 6.5 is considered by many to be the best Lancer Evolution Mitsubishi ever produced and said by some to be one of the most hard core production cars ever built.
See Pistonheads review on the TME from 2014.
Figures quoted state 2,500 examples were made from 2000-2001, of which some were LHD examples and some were RS models, which would mostly have been used for competition. As with many icons, these were forgotten for some years and went out of fashion for a while, often getting into the wrong hands, where they were mercilessly tracked, heavily modified, raced, or more often abused, crashed and broken for parts.
Very few truly pristine rust-free examples like this one exist today, but that makes the best examples all the more certain to become valuable collectors cars as time continues to pass year after year.
This particular example was sourced to order specifically for a customer, who requested we find the very best we could - and so we did just that. It would be hard to better the quality of this example, nowadays.
Unique model features: Despite Mitsubishi having made examples all the way to version X before production stopped, few will dispute that the Tommi Makkinen offered the best driving experience of all Lancer Evo's built.
Improvements over the previous Evo 6 included a high response titanium and aluminium alloy bladed turbo with a smaller diameter compressor wheel to boost quicker and be able to spin faster for higher boost.
A quicker steering rack (Same as fitted to RS models) provided improved steering response.
Tommi Makinen embossed seats with matching red-stitched Momo steering wheel, gear lever gaiter and leather gear knob in combination with unique black faced gauges with red numbering and calibrations were fitted.
White Enkei Racing Forged Alloy 17" wheels were also fitted - of the same design used in Group A WRC racing.
The front bumper was of a new design, specially shaped through wind tunnel testing in an effort to improve coefficient of friction. The lower cross member was also replaced with an alloy item for strength and light weight.
Standard & original option equipment includes: PAS, Dual SRS Airbags, Momo steering wheel, 4 channel ABS, Brembo brakes, Engine oil cooler (located behind the o/s/f biumper corner), Permanent 4WD system with Anti-Yaw, Water jets to intercooler, Rear Wiper, Central Locking, Electric mirrors with retract mode, Signature T. Makinen Recaros, etc. Original optional extras include fitted mats and Rallyart alloy sports pedal set (incl. foot rest).
Wheels are original Enkei 17" items with 225/45ZR17 sports tyres. Note the condition of wheels and calipers. No corrosion at all; which is an indication of the care and attention this car's had during it's lifetime by one (mature) Japanese owner in Nagoya.
Spec. is completely original except for the following, all of which don't detract from the originality of the car, being easily removable if ever desired:
PIAA HID headlight conversion was very expensive when produced in Japan and of high quality, with correct beam pattern; not to be confused with cheap Chinese inferior kits.
The previous owner not only looked after this car & had it serviced & inspected on schedule, but also cared about security.
A Hornet alarm is fitted (although please note this doesn't include a UK alarm certificate being made & fitted for the Japan market) and this comes with 2 remote controls. There is a McGard locking wheel nut on each wheel and a key is supplied with the original manuals & documented Japanese service history.
These cars came without a hifi as standard in Japan when new and so most people would opt to fit better quality than expensive & indifferent quality dealer options at the time. This car is fitted with Carrozzeria / Pioneer high powered speakers at each corner and an MD/CD/Radio of 200W. This is of standard 2-DIN size, which can easily be replaced with a modern UK head unit if desired (We'd recommend a Parrot Asteroid Smart as a possibility, since this allows for use of a smart phone, but also includes modern features such as voice activated music selection as well as hands free phone use and more. It's our unit of choice in each of our own cars and can be found on Amazon.co.uk).
A Defi boost gauge is fitted (without drilling or marks of any kind - so could be completely removed if preferred). This is a useful safety / diagnostic device since at a glance it confirms the car is running at correct boost - and in addition has a user-set audiable & visible warning feature for over-boost. It also has data logging and peak recording too. Defi are the best quality analogue gauges made (Owned by Nippon Seiki who in turn are owned by Honda).
A Turbo timer is also fitted. This allows the turbo to cool down after the car is driven hard & switches the car off itself after the user-set engine idle time is completed.
Brake pads are uprated at each corner with Endless MX72 pads. These give no-nonsense fade free performance and are better quality than OEM pads.
Test Drive: We drove this car in all approx 50 km. The Evo 6 TME's we source always pull noticably stronger than other lower mileage Evo 6's we've sourced before. This example's no exception, pulling strongly all the way to the redline with a tight feel. Handling is also spot-on: Confidence inspiring and capable of providing indecently quick progress on real-life roads. Brakes work strongly with no drama at all. In fact, this example drives much like a new and tight example with no faults noticed at all. It's clear to us from it's condition and full service history that this car's been very well cared for all of its life.
Condition report: Interior is in excellent condition and the single owner was a non-smoker. The lack of wear to seats indicates the driver was of light weight and a non-smoker. The ashtray & cigar lighter appear to have never been used, not even once! The driver's seat has no visible wear, creasing or marks and the passenger seat is the same. These TME's usually have some UV fading to the seats, but these are like factory new, which indicates to us that it's been garaged (exterior condition confirms this too) throughout its life. There's some wear to the carpet by the driver's heel (no holes though) and on the door panels the alcantara had started to come unstuck (which is common if not always a case with these cars) from the PVC plastic panels. We had these re-trimmed in new alcantara to better than original quality for the new owner. We did note some marks on the rear panels, which are photographed. These could be repaired at small additional cost if desired, by a specialist here in Japan - before shipping (Around £150 - £200 cost).
The exterior is in stunning condition and shows signs of having been professionally cared for, or by a very knowledgeable owner. There's a complete lack of the usual pin dents - sides are pin straight. We noted a small bump on the rear bumper with slight crazing of the paint, but you'd have to look very closely to see it. Too small to require the rear bumper repainting but mentioned to give a complete report. There's a few tiny touch-up marks we noticed on the front bumper, but essentially the bodywork throughout is amazing for a car that's 16 years old. The lack of stone chips to the sides and front also indicate this car was rarely driven fast. Discs also have low wear which confirm same.
The wheels had a couple of small scratches on, which were touched-in and we noted the tyres are about half-worn and a few years old. Most notable is that the paint is original on these rims and still completely corrosion free. Very unusual - compared to most Evos these days.
We noticed the driver's door mirror was not connected, so we investigated and found the mechanism for retracting is faulty. Being the driver's side it's not really a hindrance, since it can be folded manually easily enough.
We looked for a used mirror and didn't find one, but could search and source one & repaint if necessary -and supply for around £200 delivered to UK given time to find one.
The original bonnet insulator pad was old and damaged so when detailing the car we removed it. A new one is due to arrive to us shortly, but we shot the pictures in advance. This new panel will be fitted before shipping.
In summary condition throughout is much like that of a 2-3 year old car. An amazing example in every way. To preserve it going forward, we'd recommend a course of undersealing & rust proofing before or very soon after the car begins being used on UK roads. This can be completed by RK Tuning for around £250.00 cost.
Now a collectors piece, provided it's maintained as well as it has been over the last 17 years this unique TME is amongst the very the best of examples remaining- so it'll continue to rise in value to be an excellent investment for it's new owner. Just look at where Lancia Delta Integrale Evolution prices have gone over the last few years and where they're headed. The TME is the better car in the majority of aspects - faster, more capable, greater fun to drive, reliable, easier to find parts for, etc. - In essence, we can expect TME prices to be up where Delta Integrate Evo prices are now and beyond, within the next couple of years.
Total OTR price: £21,480 inclusive of 12 month's comprehensive warranty, full UK registration & valeting before collection.
